Martin: Trio sur des mélodies populaires irlandaises

All of Schubert’s lyricism, sensitivity and drama are particularly concentrated in the trio he composed in 1827, a year before his death. This four-movement work is among the composer’s longest chamber pieces, and its Adagio has since become one of the most beloved slow movements in the piano trio repertoire. The trio by the Swiss composer Frank Martin, composed in 1925, is also characterised by a sensitive, delicate tone, in which we can also detect the influence of Debussy and Ravel. More important, however, is the world of Irish folk music, as indicated in the title; using the rich musical ideas of Irish folklore, the composer has tried to keep as close as possible to its particular characteristics. He has avoided any changes to the melodies by using each one in its entirety to not alter the original atmosphere. The concert by the accio trio, young Austro-German musicians, offers a glimpse into this unique world. The formation takes its unusual name from the Latin verb ‘accio’ – ‘I summon’. With this in mind, they are striving to create unique musical experiences that are evoking images, emotions, memories, and individual associations.
