...a country (Hungary) whose population, even today, is barely over ten million has produced so many musicians and so much outstanding music. I am grateful for having been born and trained there.

Jenő Hubay and Ede Zathureczky – every eminent artist of the justly renowned Hungarian school of violin from the 20th century and today can be traced back to these two legendary masters, thereby signalling and testifying that it is not only the tradition of piano at the Liszt Academy that is precious and unbroken. The method and milieu of teaching has, of course, changed a lot compared to when the school servant carried in Professor Hubay's violin, and the dignified gentleman only entered the classroom himself once the students were standing at attention. But nothing has changed as regards the spirit of teaching, the respect for music and the instrument, since the Violin Sub-Department is headed up today by no less an artist and master than Kristóf Baráti. This concert provides a clear picture of this ethos, indeed the departmental concentration on performing talent, during which students and their teachers take to the podium.
