Throughout music history, there have been numerous outstanding composers whose names start with the letter B – and such a list would usually include both Ludwig van Beethoven and Johannes Brahms. However, aside from their shared initial letter, there are many other things that connect these two composers. Both originated from the area that is now Northwestern Germany, but at one point in their lives, they settled in the Austrian capital, Vienna. While Beethoven was a key figure in the transition from the Classical to the Romantic period, Brahms led the way in blending Romantic expression with classical formal traditions – for this reason, Brahms is often referred to as Beethoven’s heir. Chamber music played an important role in the oeuvre of both composers, and their violin and piano sonatas are significant milestones in the violin repertoire. Ten years ago, Kristóf Baráti and Klára Würtz performed all ten of Beethoven's violin-piano sonatas in the Solti Hall. Now, they will perform the two most famous ones, framing Brahms’ shortest, yet most lyrical and technically demanding sonata.
