Exploring Liszt: Museum Team in Weimar

29 October 2025

In October, the director and other researchers of the Franz Liszt Museum spent a few days in Weimar, where they gained valuable professional experience through extraordinary opportunities.

The researchers of the Liszt Museum—director Máté Cselényi, along with Anna Peternák, Ágnes Watzatka, Lilla Bokor, Blanka Pászthory, and Botond Éry—spent a few days in Weimar, a city that played a decisive role in the life and work of Franz Liszt as a composer and conductor for decades.

During their visit, they had the opportunity to explore the Franz Liszt Collection at the Goethe and Schiller Archive, where they were able to view Liszt’s handwritten sheet music. They also visited the Princess Anna Amalie Library (Herzogin Anna Amalia Bibliothek), which has been open since the 18th century. The library was devastated by a fire in 2004, which destroyed numerous books and manuscripts. Fortunately, the documents and musical scores related to Liszt survived unharmed.

The research team visited the Altenburg on the last day of their trip. The villa was once rented by Princess Carolyne zu Sayn-Wittgenstein, the second companion of Franz Liszt. The composer also moved there in 1848, where he lived and taught. Today, the building belongs to the Weimar College of Music, the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt.
