Hubay – A Temporary Exhibition in the Liszt Museum

14 November 2025

A new temporary exhibition has opened – as it does every year – in November. It explores the work of Franz Liszt’s friend and chamber partner, the violinist and composer Jenő Hubay.

Inspired by Liszt: The Life and Work of Jenő Hubay is the title of the new exhibition. The first part, located in the central room of the Museum, presents Hubay’s life and career. Visitors can explore his family background, youth, studies, and his relationship with Liszt, as well as the path that led him to success in Paris and London, and his later career as a professor in Brussels and Budapest, where many of his students went on to become world-famous violinists.

The second part of the exhibition, situated on the ground floor, traces the history of the Franz Liszt Memorial Room. In 1925, Hubay organised a three-day celebration for the Academy’s 50th anniversary and proposed that the institution adopt Liszt’s name. At the conclusion of the festive opening, Minister of Education Kuno Klebelsberg inaugurated the Franz Liszt Memorial Room, established on Hubay’s initiative, on the first floor of the Liszt Academy. This room is rightly regarded as the predecessor of the Liszt Museum, which opened in 1986.

Through this exhibition, the Academy of Music celebrates three anniversaries: the institution was founded 150 years ago; Liszt’s friend and chamber partner, Jenő Hubay, established the first Liszt Memorial Room; and, finally, in 2026 it will be 40 years since the Franz Liszt Memorial Museum and Research Centre opened.

The exhibition will be open to visitors from 14 November 2025 to 13 November 2026.
