Report on the TWO-DAY international Liszt-conference

28 May 2024

The international conference entitled '21st Century Perspective on Liszt and his Contemporaries' took place from 16 to 18 May with renowned researchers from nine countries.

The lectures explored Liszt's relationships with his contemporaries, revealed fascinating details about the composer's biographical sources that have not been analysed before, and contained musical analyses of his works based on the latest research.

At the opening ceremony Gyula Fekete, Vice President of Research and International Affairs of the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music and Zsuzsanna Domokos, Director of the Liszt Ferenc Memorial Museum and Research Centre gave a welcoming speech, then Alan Walker, retired professor of McMaster University, Canada gave an introductory lecture. Gábor Farkas, Head of the Piano Department of the Liszt Academy opened the first section with Liszt piano pieces, and the conference days ended with a matinee concert by Marouan Benabdallah on 18 May.

At the end of the first day, Professor Kenneth Hamilton presented his latest CD 'Handel Remembered', and at the end of the second day, the Duke of Schillingsfürst, Constantin Fürst zu Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst together with Hans Emmert had a book launch. After the lecture series, the artist Reiner Grunwald donated one of his works to the Liszt Ferenc Memorial Museum and Research Centre.
