Liszt and the French musicians of his time

The country where Liszt spent his youth in and spoke the language with the most pleasure in his whole career had an enormous impact on the composer’s life.

His relation with his fellow French musicians was many-sided and rewarding. This exhibition portrays these relations: among the French instrument makers, music publishers and critics the contemporary composers like Berlioz, Meyerbeer, Saint-Saëns, Gounod, Massenet, Delibes and Fauré have a great significance. Of course, the 2012. jubilee Debussy can’t be left out from this list. As a young Italian scholar he had the opportunity to meet, play and listen to the compelling music of the elder Liszt who himself anticipated impressionism.
