“Born in foreign lands, he closed his eyes in eternal dream in foreign lands, he never really learned Hungarian and yet he is ours.” These words were written about the virtuoso flautist Ferenc Doppler (1821–1883) after his death. Now, on the 200th anniversary of his birth, we can similarly feel his oeuvre to be our own. First and foremost, however, to do this we need to get to know it better, and this is exactly what this bicentennial concert will help us with since its programme is a representative sample of Doppler’s varied compositional oeuvre. It showcases compositions with a distinctly Hungarian tone and atmospheric salon works, bravura compositions testing the skills of flautists Mária Kerner and János Bálint, and works that challenge the excellent soprano Ingrid Kertesi, all paying tribute to not only Ferenc but his brother and frequent creative partner, flautist and composer Károly Doppler (1825-1900).
