Alexandra Dovgan (piano)
To all appearances, Alexandra Dovgan fits the category ‘wunderkind’ perfectly: she started piano aged just five, she is currently studying in the class of Mira Marchenko at the Moscow Conservatory, and despite being just 15 years old she has a whole shelf full of prestigious prizes. In 2018, she appeared at the opening event of the Mariinsky International Piano Festival in the company of Denis Matsuev and Valery Gergiev, in 2019 she was guest of Berlin Philharmonics and Amsterdam Concertgebouw, among others. In 2021, she performed Beethoven’s Piano Concerto in B-flat major at the invitation of Gustavo Dudamel, accompanied by Mahler Chamber Orchestra. However, as Grigori Sokolov put it: Alexandra is not in fact a ‘wunderkind’, because although her playing is wonderful, it is far from being that of a child, but instead is the manifestation of the personality of a mature artist. Her programme comprised of masterpieces of the piano canon evokes Romanticism: the deepest strings of the human soul resonate in the passion of Beethoven’s music, in the poetry of Schumann and the lyricism of Chopin.
