Flóra Matuska and Lucia Kiss will perform one of Debussy’s most beautiful chamber compositions and Ravel’s emblematic trio, as well as particularly cherished pieces from the cello repertoire. Baroque instrumental music is represented by Jean-Baptiste Barrière (1707–1747). The distinguished French master published four volumes of accompanied cello sonatas, among which the most original and characteristic work is the cheerful duet for two cellos from the fourth volume. This piece remains a prized work in the cello repertoire to this day. Similarly popular is the Suite for Cello Solo by Gaspar Cassadó, a pupil of Casals. This piece, dating from the 1920s, features a musical idea that recalls Zoltán Kodály’s Cello Sonata. Another piece in the concert’s program for solo cello is the series of variations written by Lutosławski in honor of Paul Sacher (1975). This work has since taken up a prominent position in the 20th-century cello repertoire.
